OU Food Pantry February Newsletter

The OU Food Pantry’s three core values are care, community, and commitment. Each month, our executive committee selects three team members who demonstrate one of these three values in their service to the OU community.

Each month, the OU Food Pantry recognizes three volunteers who have been extremely helpful in the day-to-day operation of the Food Pantry. Listed above are the three volunteers recognized for the month of February for their contributions to the OU Food Pantry’s mission!

On January 30th from 10am-3pm, the OU Food Pantry hosted another Career Closet with the help of one of our favorite partnerships, the folks at the OU Career Center. The Career Closet gives students and staff an opportunity to shop for business clothes for free. With the help of the Career Center, our team served 265 students and staff with professional wear. We are so glad many folks stopped by to shop at our mini department store!

On February 24th, members of the OU Food Pantry, led by our Health and Advocacy Team, made their way to the Oklahoma State Capitol to participate in Anti-Hunger Day. This annual event brings together food security advocates from across the state to connect with lawmakers and advocate for sustainable policy solutions that help more Oklahomans achieve food security. We were proud to have our voices represented in these important conversations about hunger in Oklahoma!

Senator Mary B. Boren is the Oklahoma State Senator for the district in which the OU-Norman campus resides. On February 6th, Senator Boren visited the OU Food Pantry to learn more about the services available on OU’s campus. We learned about legislative initiatives Senator Boren is interested in and her ideas for innovation at the OU Food Pantry. We were able to provide Senator Boren with a tour of our facility and share our mission with her. We appreciate Senator Boren taking the time to show support to our organization!

We will host a voter registration drive on March 3 from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. People who attend can register for the upcoming primary elections. Come register, and make your voices heard!

This spring the SEC is going head to head, once again! Each SEC school will be battling it out to see who can get the most donations to their respective school’s food pantry. For the entire month of March, donations will be being accepted, in the form of monetary donations and food items. One dollar or one item of food counts as one point toward success. The more donations the food pantry receives, the more people that can be helped. Show your sooner pride and win the SEC food fight!

March 22th, 2017 was the official start of the OU food pantry. This March, we are celebrating the OU Food Pantry serving the University of Oklahoma students, faculty, and staff for 9 years! We are overjoyed to have had this time serving our community and look forward to many more years.

Need a snack in between classes? Look out for OU Food Pantry’s brand new snack cart! Our Community Engagement team will be driving around campus handing out free snacks and information about the pantry! Look for us throughout the week!
